Identification

Fleas are small, dark, and fast — usually first spotted as bites around the ankles or on a pet's belly and ears.

A single female can lay dozens of eggs a day, so a small problem can become a full infestation within weeks.

Why it's a problem

Flea bites cause itching and irritation for people and pets, and can lead to secondary skin infections from scratching.

Eggs and larvae settle deep in carpet fibers and pet bedding, which is why over-the-counter sprays alone rarely solve the problem.
